Engelbert Dollfuss

Engelbert Dollfuss was a leader in Austria a long, long time ago, from 1932 to 1934. He was like the captain of a ship, in charge of the whole country. Before becoming the main leader, he worked with forests and farms.

He became the top boss during a tricky time when things were a bit wobbly in Austria. He made some big changes that everyone remembers, but not always for good reasons. His story is an important part of Austria's past.

One day, the people in charge of making rules in Austria decided to stop meeting. It was like the whole class decided to skip school! Dollfuss stepped in and took charge.

He was a bit like a strict teacher who said, 'No more talking, I'm in charge now!' He stopped some groups that were causing trouble, like the Socialists and the Austrian Nazis. He even wrote a new rulebook for the country called the First of May Constitution. It was a very different way of running things.

Dollfuss was in charge for a short time, only two years. But during that time, he made some very big decisions. He wanted Austria to be strong and independent.

Sadly, his story didn't have a happy ending. Some people who were angry about his rules, who were called Nazi agents, tried to take over. They attacked him, and he was sadly killed in 1934.

It was a very shocking event for Austria and the world.

After Dollfuss was gone, another leader named Kurt Schuschnigg took over. He kept running the country in a similar way to Dollfuss. But Austria's story was still changing.

A few years later, a very famous and powerful leader from Germany, named Adolf Hitler, took control of Austria. This was called the Anschluss. It meant Austria was no longer its own country.

So, Dollfuss's actions and his end had a big impact on what happened to Austria later.
