Empress Dowager Cixi

Long, long ago, in China, there was a very important woman named Empress Dowager Cixi. She wasn't born a queen, but she became one of the most powerful people in the whole country! She was born in 1835 and lived until 1908. She was like the boss of China for a super long time, almost 50 years! That's longer than your grandparents have been alive!

Cixi was chosen to be a wife for the Emperor when she was still a teenager. She had a son who became the next Emperor. When the Emperor passed away, her young son was too little to rule. So, Cixi stepped in to help make the rules. She was very smart and made sure she stayed in charge, guiding China through many changes.

Cixi helped China learn new things, like building better ships and training soldiers. She wanted China to be strong. Sometimes she made big decisions that surprised people, like when she supported some new ideas but then stopped them because she worried they were happening too fast. She was like a captain steering a big ship through stormy seas.
