Emperor Penguins

Key Facts
The King of Penguins!
Imagine a penguin as tall as a kindergartener and as heavy as a big dog! That's the Emperor penguin, the biggest and strongest of all penguins. They have sleek black and white feathers, with a splash of yellow on their chests and ears, like they're wearing a fancy tuxedo. These amazing birds live in the coldest place on Earth, Antarctica, where the snow and ice never melt.
Super Swimmers and Deep Divers!
Emperor penguins can't fly in the air, but they are incredible swimmers! Their wings are like flippers, perfect for zooming through the icy ocean water. They dive super deep to catch yummy fish and squid. Sometimes they dive so deep, it's like going down 170 stories in a building! They hold their breath for a long time, like a superhero holding their breath underwater.
Winter Warriors!
These penguins are special because they have their babies during the super cold Antarctic winter. The mommy penguin lays one egg and then swims away to find food. The daddy penguin keeps the egg warm on his feet, tucked under a special belly flap, for over two months! He doesn't eat during this time, waiting for the mommy to come back. It's a team effort to keep the baby penguin safe and warm.
A Penguin Family Adventure
When the baby penguin, called a chick, hatches, it's very small and fluffy. Both parents take turns going to the ocean to eat and then coming back to feed their chick. They walk a long way, sometimes as far as 75 miles, to get to their special meeting spots called colonies. These colonies can have thousands of penguins all huddled together to stay warm.
