Edwin Powell Hubble (born November 20, 1889, in Marshfield, Missouri) initially pursued a path in law, earning a degree from the University of Oxford. However, his innate curiosity and profound fascination with the celestial realm ultimately redirected his career. Returning to the United States, he immersed himself in astronomical studies, culminating in a doctorate from the University of Chicago.
His early career was marked by meticulous observation at the Mount Wilson Observatory, where he utilized the powerful Hooker Telescope. This period was crucial, as Hubble began tackling the persistent ambiguity surrounding the nature of spiral nebulae, objects that challenged the prevailing cosmological models of the early 20th century.
Resolving the Nebulae Debate
The central scientific debate of Hubble's early career revolved around the nature of nebulae. Were they gaseous clouds within our own Milky Way galaxy, or were they distant, independent stellar systems? Hubble ingeniously employed Henrietta Swan Leavitt's discovery of the period-luminosity relationship in Cepheid variable stars.
By identifying Cepheids within the Andromeda Nebula and measuring their pulsation periods, he could accurately calculate their distances. The results were staggering: Andromeda was located millions of light-years away, far beyond the confines of the Milky Way. This definitive proof, published in 1925, established Andromeda and numerous other nebulae as distinct galaxies, fundamentally expanding the known universe and solidifying Hubble's reputation as a leading observational astronomer.
Hubble's Law
Building upon his discovery of extragalactic distances, Hubble, along with Milton Humason, embarked on a systematic study of galactic redshifts in 1929. Redshift, a phenomenon where light from receding objects is stretched to longer, redder wavelengths, indicated that galaxies were moving away from Earth. Hubble's crucial insight was to correlate these recession velocities with the distances he had previously measured. He found a direct, linear relationship: the farther a galaxy was, the faster it was receding.
This empirical relationship, known as Hubble's Law (though Georges Lemaître had proposed a similar theoretical framework earlier), provided the first compelling observational evidence for an expanding universe. This discovery was a cornerstone for the development of the Big Bang theory.
Enduring Legacy
Edwin Hubble's work irrevocably altered our cosmic perspective. His proof of the existence of countless galaxies and the dynamic, expanding nature of the universe laid the foundation for modern cosmology. His contributions were so profound that the Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, was named in his honor.
