Eddystone Lighthouse

Key Facts
Where the Waves Crash!
Eddystone Lighthouse stands way out in the sea, about as far as a car drives from your town to the next one! It's built on special rocks called Eddystone Rocks, which are underwater most of the time. This means the lighthouse has to be super strong to handle big waves and stormy weather. It’s a very important spot for ships sailing nearby, making sure they don’t bump into the rocks.
Lighthouses That Didn't Last!
This is actually the fourth lighthouse built on these tricky rocks! The very first one, built a long, long time ago, was washed away by a giant storm, which was very sad. The second lighthouse burned down. The third one was super special and helped people learn how to build strong towers, and part of it is still around today as a monument. Each lighthouse had to be tougher than the last!
A Beacon of Hope!
Lighthouses are like giant nightlights for ships! They have a powerful light that spins around, shining far out into the dark ocean. This light helps sailors see where they are going and avoid dangerous rocks. The Eddystone Lighthouse has been doing this important job for hundreds of years, guiding ships safely past this tricky part of the sea. It’s a real hero of the ocean!
Building a Giant!
Building a lighthouse on rocks in the middle of the sea is super hard! The builders had to figure out how to make a tower that wouldn't fall over, even when huge waves crashed against it. They used strong materials and clever ideas to make sure it could stand tall. The lighthouse is designed to be very stable, like a strong tree with deep roots, so it can survive the wildest storms.
