The Eagles emerged not from a vacuum, but from the vibrant Los Angeles music scene of the early 1970s. The quartet of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner were already accomplished musicians, having honed their skills as session players and touring musicians, notably for Linda Ronstadt. Their collective talent was evident on Ronstadt's self-titled 1972 album, but they soon felt the pull to forge their own identity.

Under the guidance of David Geffen, they signed with his fledgling Asylum Records, a move that would prove instrumental in launching their career. Their self-titled debut album, 'Eagles' (1972), was a masterclass in country-rock fusion, yielding immediate hits like 'Take It Easy' and 'Witchy Woman.' While the follow-up, 'Desperado' (1973), explored a more narrative, Western-themed sound and peaked lower on the charts, its title track became an enduring anthem.

The band's sonic palette began to broaden with the addition of guitarist Don Felder in 1974, leading to 'On the Border,' which produced their first US number-one single, 'Best of My Love,' and signaled their transition into mainstream rock superstardom.

The mid-1970s marked the Eagles' ascent to unparalleled commercial success and critical acclaim. The 1975 album 'One of These Nights' was a watershed moment, becoming their first number-one album in the US and achieving significant international recognition. This album showcased their evolving sound, blending rock, pop, and country influences with sophisticated arrangements.

It spawned the US number-one hit 'One of These Nights,' their first top-ten single outside North America, alongside other massive hits like 'Lyin' Eyes' and 'Take It to the Limit.' This period also saw a significant lineup change with Bernie Leadon departing and being replaced by the virtuosic guitarist Joe Walsh. Walsh's harder-edged rock sensibilities injected a new dynamism into the band, perfectly complementing their established sound and paving the way for their most ambitious projects.

The Eagles' commercial juggernaut continued with the release of 'Greatest Hits (1971–1975)' in 1976. This compilation album achieved a level of success rarely seen, becoming the best-selling album in US history with 38 million copies sold. It served as a perfect primer for their magnum opus, 'Hotel California,' released later that same year.

The 'Hotel California' album was a cultural phenomenon, selling over 26 million copies in the US and more than 32 million worldwide, ranking as the third best-selling album in US history. The title track, 'Hotel California,' is a masterpiece of lyrical ambiguity and musical prowess, becoming their only top-ten hit in the United Kingdom and a global sensation. The album also produced another number-one single, 'New Kid in Town,' further solidifying their status as musical titans.

The Eagles continued their reign into the late 1970s with 'The Long Run' (1979), which produced the number-one hit 'Heartache Tonight.' However, internal tensions led to the band's dissolution in 1980. Despite the breakup, their music remained a constant presence, and the demand for their return was immense. The band reunited in 1994 for the 'Hell Freezes Over' project, a successful blend of live performances and new studio tracks, which reignited their popularity and led to extensive touring.

They continued to release new material, including the number-one album 'Long Road Out of Eden' in 2007. The Eagles' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 underscored their profound impact.
