Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Duchy!
Once upon a time, in a place called Northern Italy, there was a special land called the Duchy of Milan. It was like a big kingdom, but instead of a king, it was ruled by a Duke! This duchy started in 1395, which is a super long time ago. It had 26 towns and lots of farms. It was like a giant puzzle piece in Europe, with other countries like Venice and Switzerland right next door.
Who Were the Visconti and Sforza?
The first important family to rule Milan was called the Visconti. They were like the founding parents of the duchy. Later, another powerful family, the Sforza, took over.
Under the Sforza family, Milan became super rich and famous for making beautiful silk. This silk was so special that it made Milan one of the wealthiest places in Europe during a time called the Renaissance. Think of it like a playground that suddenly got the best new swings and slides!
A Land Everyone Wanted!
Because Milan was so rich and important, other powerful countries like France and the Habsburg Monarchy (which was like a giant empire) started fighting over it. They wanted to rule Milan and its treasures. For many years, it was like a game of tag, with different rulers taking turns. Eventually, it became part of Spain, then Austria, and then France again!
What Happened to the Duchy?
The Duchy of Milan didn't last forever. After Napoleon Bonaparte, a famous French leader, conquered it, it was changed. Instead of being a duchy, its land became part of a new kingdom called Lombardy-Venetia, ruled by the Emperor of Austria. Later, this land became part of the country we now know as Italy. So, the duchy is gone, but its story is still part of Italy's amazing history!
