Diogo Cão: The Brave Explorer!

Diogo Cão was a Portuguese explorer who lived a long, long time ago, around the time your grandparents' grandparents were born! He was like a superhero of the sea, sailing on big wooden ships. His job was to explore the western coast of Africa, which was a mysterious place back then.

He sailed so far that he discovered places like the Congo River and even parts of countries we know today as Angola and Namibia.

One of the coolest things Diogo Cão found was the giant Congo River! Imagine a river so wide you can't see the other side, like a super-duper long water slide. He also sailed along coastlines that were totally new to Europeans. He left behind special stone markers, called 'padrões', to show he had been there. These were like his explorer signatures on the land!

Diogo Cão made two big trips, or voyages, in the 1480s. That's like going on a super long school trip, but instead of a bus, he had a ship, and instead of a playground, he had the whole ocean! He was one of the most important explorers of his time because he helped people learn about a whole new part of the world. His discoveries were like finding hidden treasure on a map!

Even though Diogo Cão lived hundreds of years ago, we still talk about him today because he was so brave and curious. He helped make maps of Africa much more complete. Think of him like a detective who solved a big puzzle about our planet. His journeys helped people understand that the world was much bigger and more exciting than they thought!
