Meet King Desiderius!

Once upon a time, in a land called Italy, there was a king named Desiderius. He was the king of a group of people called the Lombards. He ruled for a long, long time, from when you might be in first grade until you're in third grade! He was the very last king of the Lombards. Think of him like the captain of a sports team, but for a whole kingdom!

A Royal Wedding and a Big Surprise!

King Desiderius had a daughter. This daughter married a very important and famous king named Charlemagne. Charlemagne was like a superhero king who had a huge kingdom. But, even though they were family, Charlemagne ended up taking over Desiderius's kingdom! It’s like if your best friend’s dad came and took over your playground. It was a big deal back then!

Why We Still Talk About Desiderius

Even though Desiderius isn't king anymore, people remember him because of his daughter and her famous husband, Charlemagne. He's like a character in a history storybook. He’s also important because he was the last Lombard king. After him, the Lombards didn't have their own king anymore. So, he’s a special part of Italy’s past.

A King's Story

Desiderius was born a very long time ago, around the year 720. That's so long ago, your great-great-great-great-grandparents weren't even born yet! He became king in 756 and ruled until 774. He lived a life full of important events, like royal weddings and big changes in his kingdom. His story shows us how kingdoms and families can be connected in surprising ways.
