Key Facts
Welcome to the Center of the World!
Long, long ago, people in Greece thought Delphi was the most important spot on Earth! They even had a special stone, like a belly button for the world, called the Omphalos. It was a sacred place, meaning it was super special and holy. People traveled from everywhere to visit. It was built on the side of a big mountain called Mount Parnassus, which is like a giant, rocky playground.
The Oracle Who Knew It All!
The most famous thing about Delphi was the Pythia. She was like a wise woman, or an oracle, who could tell people what might happen in the future. Kings and queens would come to ask her important questions about wars or if they should build new things. She would give them answers, but sometimes they were a little tricky to understand, like a riddle!
A Monster and a Mighty God!
There’s a cool story about how Delphi got its name. A giant, scary serpent named Delphyne lived there. The god Apollo, who was super strong and cool, fought and defeated the serpent. After that, the place became known as Delphi. It shows how brave Apollo was and how important this place was, even needing a god to protect it!
A Super Old City Still Today!
Today, Delphi is a huge pile of old ruins, like a giant puzzle from the past. Scientists and explorers have dug it up, and it’s now part of a national park. Many different cities in ancient Greece built special buildings there to show they were all friends. It’s so amazing that it’s now a World Heritage Site, which means the whole world thinks it’s super important to protect!
