David Pratt: The Man Who Tried to Stop a Big Problem
Key Facts
Who Was David Pratt?
David Pratt was a grown-up who lived a long time ago in places called Britain and South Africa. He was a businessman, which means he ran businesses, and also a farmer. But what made him special was that he really cared about people.
He saw that some people were treated unfairly just because of the color of their skin, and he didn't think that was right at all. He wanted everyone to be treated equally and with kindness.
A Very Sad Day and a Big Decision
One day, something very sad happened called the Sharpeville massacre. This was a terrible event where many Black people were hurt. David Pratt was so, so angry and upset about this unfairness that he decided he had to do something.
He believed the leader of the country, Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd, was responsible for these bad things. So, David Pratt made a very brave, but also very dangerous, choice to try and stop the Prime Minister.
The Moment of Action!
David Pratt decided to try and stop Prime Minister Verwoerd. He found a way to get close to him and, in a very dramatic moment, he shot the Prime Minister! It was like a scene from a movie, but it was real life.
He shot him not once, but twice! Can you imagine how shocking that must have been? Thankfully, Prime Minister Verwoerd survived this attempt.
It was a very serious event that showed how strongly David Pratt felt.
What Happened Next?
Even though David Pratt tried his best to stop the Prime Minister, his attempt didn't work out the way he hoped. Prime Minister Verwoerd lived on. Sadly, six years later, someone else did manage to assassinate the Prime Minister.
David Pratt's story is a reminder that sometimes people try to make big changes, and even when they don't succeed in the way they planned, their actions can still be remembered. He was a man who stood up for what he believed in.
