DAC 6135

The DAC 6135 emerged in 1975 as a significant advancement in Romanian automotive manufacturing, produced by Diesel Auto Camion (DAC) in Brașov. This truck was not conceived in a vacuum; it represented an evolution from the earlier SR 113 Bucegi, incorporating modernizations that enhanced its performance and utility. The core of this evolution was the integration of a 99 kW (133 bhp) 6-cylinder Saviem diesel engine.

Saviem, a French manufacturer, provided a robust and reliable powerplant that was well-suited for the demanding operational environment expected of a heavy-duty truck. This engine choice was critical, offering a balance of power, fuel efficiency for its class, and durability, which were paramount for trucks intended for long service lives in challenging conditions. The DAC 6135 was engineered with a focus on practicality and load-bearing capability, making it an immediate success within Romania and a viable export product.

The true strength of the DAC 6135 lay in its adaptability and substantial carrying capacity. The base 6135R model was offered with three distinct wheelbases, enabling customization for different turning radii and load distribution requirements. Further enhancing its utility, DAC produced a tipper variant, essential for construction and earthmoving, and a tractor unit designed for hauling semi-trailers.

Recognizing the need for off-road capability, the 6135RA and 6135RAN models were equipped with four-wheel drive systems, significantly improving traction and mobility on unpaved roads, muddy terrain, or steep gradients, thereby extending its operational reach.

The DAC 6135 served as a cornerstone of Romania's transportation infrastructure for nearly two decades. Even as the automotive industry progressed, the DAC 6135 maintained its relevance. The planned introduction of the more advanced 8135 model in 1985 did not immediately phase out the 6135. Instead, it continued in limited production alongside its successor for several years.
