Coyote

Key Facts
Who's That Howling?
Coyotes are wild dogs that look a bit like a small wolf or a big fox. They have pointy ears, a bushy tail, and a long snout perfect for sniffing out snacks. They are super clever and can live in forests, deserts, and even near big cities! Their scientific name is Canis latrans, which means 'barking dog' in Latin. They are known for their amazing howls and yips that echo through the night.
Coyote's Amazing Homes
Coyotes are found all over North America, from the snowy north of Canada all the way down to sunny Mexico. They are super adaptable and can make their homes in all sorts of places. You might find them in wide-open grasslands, spooky forests, or even in parks and backyards in towns and cities.
They often dig dens for their families, or sometimes they just find a cozy spot under a bush or in a rocky cave.
What's for Dinner?
Coyotes are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals! Their favorite meals are small critters like mice, rabbits, and squirrels. But they're not picky eaters! They'll also munch on berries, fruits, insects, and sometimes even leftovers they find. They are excellent hunters and can run pretty fast to catch their food. They often hunt alone or with a partner.
Coyote Family Life
Coyotes usually live in small family groups. When it's time to have babies, the mother coyote will have a litter of about 4 to 7 pups. These baby coyotes are called pups, and they are born blind and helpless. Both parents work hard to feed and protect their pups until they are old enough to hunt for themselves. Coyotes can live for about 6 to 8 years in the wild.
