Meet Emperor Commodus!

Commodus was a Roman emperor, which is like a king for the ancient Roman Empire. He was in charge for a long time, from when he was 19 years old until he was 31. He even ruled with his dad, Marcus Aurelius, for a little bit before being the main boss.

His time as emperor was super important because it was right after a really peaceful time called the Pax Romana, which means 'Roman Peace'. When Commodus's rule ended, things got a bit more chaotic!

From Prince to Gladiator!

Commodus was born a prince, and he got to travel with his dad, the emperor, when he was just a kid. He became an emperor really young, at 16! But instead of just doing kingly things, Commodus loved to pretend he was a superhero gladiator.

He would even fight in the big Colosseum, which is like a giant sports stadium. He thought he was so amazing that he started to believe he was a god, like Jupiter!

The End of a Peaceful Time

Before Commodus, the Roman Empire had a long period of peace and happiness called the Pax Romana. It was like a super long summer vacation for everyone! But when Commodus took over, things started to change.

There were lots of secret plots and arguments happening behind the scenes. He wasn't as interested in running the empire as his dad was. Instead, he focused on his gladiator games and acting like a god.

A Surprising End

Commodus's reign ended in a very surprising way. He was actually killed by a wrestler named Narcissus! It wasn't a big battle or anything. This assassination meant that a whole family of emperors, called the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, came to an end. After Commodus, the Roman Empire went through a bit of a bumpy ride, with several emperors trying to take charge in a short amount of time.
