Where is This Giant Cake?

Chogha Zanbil is like a super old, giant step-pyramid hiding in the desert of Iran. It's so far away from big cities that it's about as far from Susa as a long car ride to visit grandma, and even farther from Ahvaz! The weather there is usually hot and dry, perfect for keeping old stones safe from rain.

It sits in a special place in the Khuzestan province, which is like a big neighborhood in Iran.

Who Built This Amazing Place?

A long, long time ago, around 3,200 years ago (that's way before your great-great-great-grandparents were born!), people called the Elamites lived here. Their king, Untash-Napirisha, wanted to build something amazing. He built this giant structure, which was like a temple for their gods. It was a very important place for them, like a super special church or temple for us today.

What's So Cool About It?

This place is famous because it's one of the best-kept giant step-pyramids (called a ziggurat) that isn't in a place called Mesopotamia. It's like finding a dinosaur bone that's almost perfectly whole! It was built with lots of bricks, stacked up high.

Imagine building a tower taller than a giraffe, but with many levels! It’s so special that it’s on a list of the most important places in the whole world.

A City That Disappeared!

Sadly, this amazing city didn't last forever. Around 2,600 years ago, a mean king from a place called Assyria came and broke it. It was like a big bully smashing a sandcastle. For a very long time, it was forgotten, buried under sand. But now, people have dug it up so we can all see this incredible piece of history and learn about the people who built it.
