Catapult

A catapult is like a super-strong arm that can throw things really, really far! Long ago, people built these amazing machines to launch big rocks, flaming arrows, or even beehives at their enemies. They were like the ancient world's giant slingshots, but much bigger and more powerful. Think of it as a giant toy that could throw a bowling ball across a football field!

Catapults were invented a super long time ago, over 2,400 years ago, in ancient Greece! The Greeks were very clever and wanted a way to break down castle walls. They figured out how to use tension and levers to make these machines.

Over time, different kinds of catapults were invented, like the ballista which shot arrows, and the onager which was great for hurling big stones. They were used in battles all over the ancient world.

Catapults were super important because they changed how battles were fought. Before catapults, attacking a strong castle was very hard. These machines could smash down walls, making it easier for armies to get inside.

They could also scare enemies from a distance. Imagine a giant machine throwing rocks over your head! It was a powerful weapon that made armies think twice before attacking a well-defended place.

Catapults worked by storing up energy and then releasing it very quickly. Some used a strong rope or band that was pulled back, like stretching a rubber band. When the rope was let go, it snapped forward, flinging whatever was in a cup or sling.

Others used a heavy counterweight that dropped down, pulling one end of a lever arm up very fast. This powerful arm would then swing forward and launch its payload!
