Key Facts
What's a Caste?
A caste is like a special club that people are born into. In some places, like India a long time ago, these clubs were very important. Each caste had different jobs and rules. Some castes were thought to be higher than others. It was like being put in a box from the moment you were born, and it was very hard to change it. This system is called the caste system.
Where Did Caste Come From?
The caste system in India started a very, very long time ago, maybe over 3,000 years ago! It's thought to have grown from different groups of people and their jobs. Over time, these groups became more fixed, meaning people stayed in the same caste as their parents. It was like a ladder, but you couldn't climb up or down easily. This system shaped how people lived and interacted for centuries.
Why Caste Matters
The caste system made life unfair for many people. Those in lower castes often had to do the hardest or dirtiest jobs and weren't treated with respect. They had fewer chances to learn or get better jobs. This caused a lot of sadness and anger. Even though it's not as strong now, the ideas from the caste system can still affect how people are treated today.
Groups in the System
The caste system had different levels, like layers in a cake. At the very top were the Brahmins, who were often priests and teachers. Below them were the Kshatriyas, who were warriors and rulers. Then came the Vaishyas, who were merchants and farmers. At the bottom were the Shudras, who did labor jobs. There were also people outside these groups, called Dalits, who faced the most hardship.
