Key Facts
Where the Caspian Seal Lives!
Imagine a super-duper big lake, so big it's like an ocean! That's the Caspian Sea, and it's the only place in the whole world where Caspian seals live. They love to hang out near the shore, on rocky islands, and even on floating ice. When it gets cold, they gather on the northern shores. When it warms up, they swim to warmer, deeper parts of the sea and near big rivers.
A Seal's Amazing Journey!
Long, long ago, even before dinosaurs, the Caspian Sea was connected to the Arctic Ocean by rivers. These rivers were like highways for the seals! They traveled down these rivers and got stuck in the Caspian Sea when the rivers dried up. Itβs like if your backyard suddenly became an island! This happened so long ago that they are now a totally unique kind of seal.
Tiny but Tough Seals!
Caspian seals are one of the smallest kinds of seals. They are about as long as a small car, but much fatter! They have sleek, greyish-brown fur that helps them hide. They are excellent swimmers and divers, using their strong flippers to zoom through the water. They eat fish to stay healthy and strong, just like you eat your veggies!
Why Seals Need Our Help!
Even though Caspian seals are amazing, they are in trouble. There aren't as many of them as there used to be. This is because their home, the Caspian Sea, is changing, and sometimes it's hard for them to find food or safe places to rest. Scientists are working hard to learn more about them and help protect them so they can keep swimming in their special sea.
