Key Facts
Where is This Giant Water Blob?
The Caspian Sea is super special because it's the biggest lake in the whole world! It's so big, it's like a country made of water. It sits between Europe and Asia, like a big watery hug. Countries like Russia, Iran, and Kazakhstan are its neighbors. It's not connected to any other oceans, so it's like a giant, private swimming pool for these countries!
It's HUGE!
How big is the Caspian Sea? It's about the same size as the country of Japan! If you were to fly over it, it would take a very, very long time to see the other side. It's also very long, stretching as far as the distance from the top of your head to your toes, about 1,200 times! It's much bigger than any lake you've probably seen.
Salty Like the Ocean, But Not Quite
The Caspian Sea is salty, but not as salty as the ocean. Imagine if the ocean was like a super-salty pretzel, the Caspian Sea is more like a lightly salted cracker. This special saltiness is thanks to all the rivers that flow into it, like the mighty Volga River, which is Europe's longest river! These rivers bring fresh water, but also minerals that make it a little bit salty.
What Lives There?
Even though it's a lake, the Caspian Sea is home to lots of amazing animals. It's famous for its sturgeon fish, which give us yummy caviar. There are also seals, like the Caspian seal, which is the only kind of seal that lives in a lake! It's a busy underwater world with lots of different creatures calling it home.
