Where the Giant Forests Grew!

Millions of years ago, way before dinosaurs, there were super-duper big forests! These forests grew in a warm, wet place right around the middle of the Earth, like a giant green belt. Think of it like a huge, steamy jungle covering parts of what are now Europe and North America. It was a very different world back then, with no people or even modern animals around to see it.

When the Forests Got Smaller!

Suddenly, about 305 million years ago, something strange happened. The giant, lush rainforests started to shrink! It was like someone turned down the water and made the weather drier. This event, called the Carboniferous rainforest collapse, broke up the big forests into smaller patches, like islands in a sea. This made it hard for plants and animals to survive.

Tiny Animals and Plants!

Because the forests became smaller and separated, many plants and animals had to adapt. Some creatures became much smaller, like shrinking down from the size of a school bus to the size of a cat! This was to help them survive in the smaller forest homes. Sadly, many of these smaller plants and animals couldn't survive for long and disappeared forever.

What's Left Today?

Even though the giant rainforests changed, the world kept going. The plants that lived back then are super important because they turned into the coal we use today! So, even though the collapse was a sad event for the creatures living then, it helped create something useful for us now. The Earth's forests have changed a lot over millions of years.
