Where in the World Are These Islands?

Cape Verde is a super cool group of islands way out in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Africa. Think of it like a scattered necklace of 10 islands, all made by fiery volcanoes long, long ago! They are so far from Africa, it's like being on a different playground!

The biggest island is called Santiago, and that's where the capital city, Praia, is located. These islands are like special gems in the big blue sea.

A Long, Long Time Ago...

Nobody lived on these islands until about 600 years ago! Then, brave explorers from Portugal found them. They decided to build homes and towns, making it one of the first places in a warm, sunny area where Europeans lived.

For a while, these islands were a very busy stop for ships trading all sorts of things, including people. Later, the islands became independent, meaning they got to make their own rules!

People, Music, and Smiles!

The people of Cape Verde are a mix of families who came from Africa and Europe a long time ago. They speak Portuguese, but also a special language called Cape Verdean Creole. Music is a HUGE part of life here, with happy and sometimes sad songs that make you want to dance!

Even though there aren't many people living on the islands, lots of Cape Verdeans live in other countries, like the United States and Portugal.

What Do People Do There?

Cape Verde doesn't have a lot of natural treasures like big forests or lots of minerals. So, the people are super smart and focus on things like tourism! Lots of visitors come to enjoy the sunny beaches and beautiful views. They also have a growing economy, which means they are building more businesses and creating jobs. It's a place that's growing and changing, with lots of hope for the future!
