Key Facts
Meet Caligula, the Little Boots Emperor!
Caligula was a Roman emperor, which is like a super-king of a very big country called the Roman Empire. His real name was Gaius, but soldiers called him Caligula because when he was a little boy, he wore tiny soldier boots, like little boots! He was born a long, long time ago, in the year 12. He became emperor when he was just 24 years old, which is pretty young to be in charge of so many people.
A Wild Ride as Emperor
Caligula's time as emperor was short, only about four years! At first, people thought he was nice and fair. But then, things changed. Some stories say he became very strange and did unusual things. He loved building big projects like racetracks and theaters for people to enjoy. He even started building giant water pipes called aqueducts to bring fresh water to the city of Rome.
Did He Really Make His Horse a Consul?
One of the most surprising stories about Caligula is that he might have wanted to make his favorite horse a consul. A consul was a very important job in Rome, like a president! This story shows how some people thought he acted in very odd ways. It's hard to know if it's completely true, as stories from long ago can sometimes get mixed up.
The End of the Little Boots Emperor
Sadly, Caligula's rule didn't last. Some people who worked for him, like soldiers and important leaders, were not happy with him. They made a plan and ended his life when he was only 28 years old. After he was gone, another emperor named Claudius took over. Caligula's short and surprising life is a famous part of Roman history.
