Bumblebees: Fuzzy Garden Friends!

Bumblebees are like fuzzy, flying teddy bears of the insect world! They are known for their round, plump bodies covered in soft, black and yellow fur. Unlike skinny bees, bumblebees are chunky and can be quite large.

They have six legs, two antennae on their heads, and two pairs of wings that beat super fast to make that familiar buzzing sound. They love to visit flowers, collecting yummy nectar and pollen.

Bumblebees can be found in many places all over the world, especially in cooler countries in the Northern Hemisphere, like North America, Europe, and Asia. They like to build their homes underground, often in old mouse holes or under sheds. Sometimes they even make nests in thick grass or in piles of leaves. They need places with lots of flowers nearby so they can find plenty of food.

Bumblebees are super important because they help plants grow! When they visit flowers to drink nectar, pollen sticks to their fuzzy bodies. Then, when they fly to another flower, they carry the pollen with them, which helps the flowers make seeds and fruits. This is called pollination! Without bumblebees, we wouldn't have as many yummy fruits like apples and berries.

Bumblebees are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite foods are nectar and pollen from flowers. Nectar is a sweet liquid that gives them energy, like juice for us. Pollen is like a protein powder for them, and it's especially important for feeding their babies. They use their long tongues, called proboscis, to slurp up the nectar.
