Key Facts
What Was British Ceylon?
Once upon a time, a beautiful island called Ceylon was ruled by its own kings. But then, people from a faraway country called Britain came and took charge! They called this land British Ceylon. It was like a big part of their empire, and they stayed for a very, very long time, until 1948. This was a time when the whole island, which we now know as Sri Lanka, was under British rule.
When Did the British Arrive?
The British started taking control of parts of Ceylon in 1796. At first, they didn't rule the whole island. There was a special kingdom called Kandy that they didn't control right away. But by 1817, they had managed to rule the entire island. So, from 1817 all the way until 1948, the British were in charge of all of Ceylon. That's longer than your grandparents have been alive!
Why Was It a Big Deal?
When the British took over, it ended over 2,300 years of kings and queens ruling the island! This was a huge change. The British brought their own ways of doing things, and they were very interested in the island's treasures, like spices and gems. This period of British rule is a super important part of Sri Lanka's story, helping shape the country it is today.
A New Beginning!
After many years, the people of Ceylon wanted to rule themselves again. They worked hard to get their independence back. Finally, on February 4, 1948, Ceylon became a free country once more! This marked the end of British rule and the start of a new chapter for the island, which is now called Sri Lanka. It's a story of change, rule, and finally, freedom.
