Bonn–Oberkassel Dog

Long, long ago, even before castles and knights, there was a special dog named the Bonn–Oberkassel dog. This dog lived about 14,000 years ago! It was found buried next to two people, like they were best friends forever.

This dog was about as tall as a big dog you might see at a park today, maybe up to your belly button. It was a bit smaller than a modern husky, weighing about as much as a big bag of dog food.

When this dog was a tiny puppy, it got very sick. It had trouble with its teeth and gums, and it might have had a sickness like doggy measles! It was so sick that it probably wouldn't have made it without help. Kind humans must have fed it, given it water, and kept it clean. This shows they really cared about the dog, maybe even more than just a working animal. They treated it like a beloved pet!

When the Bonn–Oberkassel dog grew up and passed away, something amazing happened. It was buried right next to two people! This was a very special honor.

Sometimes, people buried things they loved with them when they died, like toys or special tools. This dog was so important to the people it lived with that they wanted it to be with them even in the afterlife. It's like a super-duper best friend forever.

People found the bones of this ancient dog and the humans in Germany a long time ago, in 1914. At first, they didn't realize all the bones belonged to a dog! Some bones were put away in different places. But later, scientists put all the pieces together and realized they had found a very old dog. This discovery helps us learn how people and dogs lived together thousands of years ago.
