Boishakhi Mela

Imagine a super fun party called a Mela! Boishakhi Mela is a big Bengali celebration, like a giant festival. People get together to celebrate the Bengali New Year, which is called Pohela Boishakh.

It's a time for music, dancing, and enjoying delicious food. This special Mela happens in places far from Bangladesh, like the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, where many Bengali families live.

In London, the Boishakhi Mela is HUGE! It takes over streets in an area called Banglatown. Think of it like a giant playground stretching along Brick Lane and into parks like Weavers Fields and Allen Gardens. It’s so big that it’s the largest outdoor Asian festival in all of Europe! It’s even bigger than most school playgrounds you’ve ever seen.

The Bengali New Year is on April 14th, but the Mela is usually held on a Sunday in May. Why May? Because April can sometimes have lots of rain, and nobody wants a rainy party! So, they pick a sunnier time to make sure everyone can have the best time. It started in 1997, so it’s been going on for a long time, making new memories each year.

The Boishakhi Mela is super important because it helps Bengali families feel connected to their culture, even when they are far from home. It’s a chance to share their traditions, music, and food with everyone. It’s also the second-biggest street festival in the whole United Kingdom, after the famous Notting Hill Carnival. Over 80,000 people come to join the fun!
