Battle of Sauce (1816)

Long ago, in a place called the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, people were trying to figure out who should be in charge. Two groups, the Unitarians and the Federalists, really disagreed! They were like two teams on a playground who couldn't agree on the rules.

This disagreement led to lots of arguments and even battles, like the one that happened near a town called Sauce. It wasn't about a yummy tomato sauce, but about who had the power!

On January 21, 1816, a big fight happened near Sauce. One side was led by a man named Juan Antonio Lavalleja, who had about 100 soldiers. The other side was led by a man named Manuel Dorrego, and he had more soldiers, maybe around 200.

It was a pretty close fight! Lavalleja's soldiers were brave, but Dorrego's army was bigger. In the end, Dorrego's side won the battle.

It was a tough day for Lavalleja and his men.

Even though Dorrego won this battle, the fighting between the groups didn't stop right away. This battle was like one chapter in a long, complicated story. It showed that both sides were serious about their ideas and willing to fight for them.

The people in this region were trying to build a new country, and battles like this were part of figuring out how it would work. It reminds us that big changes often come with big disagreements.

The two most important leaders in this particular fight were Juan Antonio Lavalleja and Manuel Dorrego. Lavalleja was a soldier who believed in his cause, even though he lost this battle. Dorrego was the leader of the winning army.
