Barbette Ship

Barbette ships were like giant metal fortresses that sailed on the sea! They were built a long, long time ago, between the 1860s and 1890s. Think of them as early battleships, but with a special way of carrying their big guns. Instead of hiding them completely, they put them on special armored platforms called barbettes. These ships were super important for navies all around the world!

These amazing ships were invented because people wanted stronger and safer ways to put big cannons on boats. Before barbette ships, cannons were often in boxes. The barbette design let the cannons turn more easily and offered better protection. Many countries built these ships in the 1870s and 1880s. They were like the cool new toys for navies, helping them feel more powerful on the water.

The coolest thing about barbette ships was their cannons! They had big, powerful guns that could shoot far. These guns sat on special armored circles called barbettes. This meant the cannons could swing around and aim at different spots, and the barbettes helped protect the sailors and the gun from enemy attacks. Barbette ships didn't fight in too many super famous battles, but they did see some action! They were involved in smaller fights, like a big bombardment in Alexandria in 1882. They also fought in a naval battle during a war between China and France in 1884.

Later, some Chinese barbette ships were in a very big battle in 1894. Even though they were eventually replaced by newer ships, they were a big deal for a while!
