Key Facts
Meet the Tree That Grows Sideways!
Banyan trees are super special because they don't just grow up, they grow OUT! They have roots that hang down from their branches, and when these roots touch the ground, they grow into new trunks. This makes the tree spread wider and wider, like a whole forest made of just one tree! Itβs like having a giant, leafy umbrella that keeps getting bigger.
A Tree That's a Home for Many!
These giant trees are found in warm places like India. They are so big and have so many branches and leaves that they become homes for lots of animals. Birds build nests, monkeys play on the branches, and many other creatures find shade and shelter under their enormous canopy. The Indian Banyan is even the national tree of India!
How Does a Banyan Grow So Big?
It all starts with a tiny seed, often carried by a bird or bat. This seed lands on another tree or a building and starts to grow. It sends down roots that wrap around the host, and eventually, the banyan grows so big it can stand on its own, even if the original tree it started on is gone! These special roots are called prop roots.
Why Banyans Are So Cool!
Banyan trees are amazing because they can live for a very, very long time, and they keep growing and spreading. Some banyans are so old and wide they look like a small jungle! They are important because they provide homes and food for many animals and give us lots of shade. They are like gentle giants of the plant world.
