The mandibular condyles articulate within elongated cavities in the skull, a feature that confers exceptional bite strength and resistance to dislocation.
This specialized articulation limits jaw movement primarily to opening, closing, and side-to-side sliding, ideal for crushing prey and processing tough plant material, though it sacrifices the rotational jaw movement found in many other mammals. Facial markings, often bold black and white stripes, are common and may play a role in species recognition or social signaling in low-light conditions.

The diverse badger species occupy a wide array of ecological niches across continents, reflecting their adaptability. Their omnivorous diet is a key factor in this success. While earthworms are a staple for many species, particularly the European badger, their diet is highly opportunistic.
They consume a broad spectrum of invertebrates, including insects, larvae, and mollusks, as well as small vertebrates like rodents, amphibians, reptiles, and bird eggs. Plant matter forms a significant portion of their diet, especially seasonally, with fruits, berries, roots, bulbs, and fungi being important food sources. Their digging activities also play an ecological role, aerating the soil and creating habitats for other smaller creatures that may utilize abandoned burrows.

Habitats range widely, including deciduous and coniferous forests, grasslands, meadows, agricultural areas, scrublands, and even semi-deserts. The European badger prefers mixed woodlands and hedgerows, while the American badger thrives in open country like prairies and deserts, utilizing its digging skills to create burrows for shelter and hunting.
Ferret-badgers inhabit forested areas in Southeast Asia. While many badger species are currently listed as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN, several face localized threats. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to agriculture and urbanization, road mortality, and persecution by humans can impact populations. The conservation status varies significantly; for instance, the European badger is widespread, but specific populations may be vulnerable.
Understanding the specific ecological requirements and threats faced by each species is crucial for effective conservation efforts, ensuring these unique mammals continue to inhabit their diverse global ranges.
Behavioral Ecology and Social Structures
Badger social structures exhibit considerable variation.
