Key Facts
Meet the First Farmers!
A super long time ago, even before the pyramids were built, there was a special group of people called the Badarians. They lived in a place called Upper Egypt. What was super cool about them is that they were some of the very first people in that area to learn how to grow their own food, like yummy grains!
This meant they didn't have to just hunt for everything they ate. They were like the original gardeners of Egypt!
When Did They Live?
The Badarians were around between 4400 and 4000 BC. That's so long ago, it's hard to even imagine! If you think about how old your grandparents are, then imagine people living thousands and thousands of years before them. Some scientists even think they might have started even earlier, maybe by 5000 BC! That's like going back to when dinosaurs were around, but these were people, not dinosaurs!
What Made Them Special?
The Badarians were really good at making things. They made beautiful pottery, which are like clay pots and bowls. Some of their pottery was so smooth and shiny, it looked like it was made of black, polished stone! They also made cool jewelry from beads. They were also the first to show us that people in Upper Egypt were starting to farm, which was a HUGE step for everyone living there.
Why We Remember Them
Even though the Badarians lived so long ago, they are important because they show us how people in Egypt started to change their lives. Learning to farm meant they could have more food and live in bigger groups. They were like the first big step towards building the amazing Egyptian civilization that we learn about in school, with pharaohs and pyramids. They were the beginning of something big!
