Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was a very important leader. One night, he went to a play called 'Our American Cousin' at Ford's Theatre. It was April 14, 1865. He was with his wife and some friends. Suddenly, a man named John Wilkes Booth jumped out and shot the president! It was a very sad and shocking moment for everyone.

John Wilkes Booth was an actor, which means he was good at pretending to be other people. But he was also a supporter of the South during the Civil War. He had a big, bad plan to hurt the United States government. He thought that by hurting President Lincoln and other leaders, he could help the South win the war. But his plan didn't work out the way he hoped.

After shooting President Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth ran away. The president was taken to a house across the street, but sadly, he died the next morning. The government started a huge search for Booth, like the biggest game of hide-and-seek ever! They looked everywhere for 12 days until they found him. He was caught and didn't get away with his crime.

When President Lincoln died, the whole country was very sad. He was the first president to be killed while in office. People all over the United States felt like they had lost a hero. A special train carried his body to his home state so people could say goodbye. This sad event made everyone think about how important peace is.
