Junagadh's Big Decision!
Key Facts
What's a Junagadh?
Junagadh was like a small kingdom, called a princely state, in a place that is now India. It was ruled by a Nawab, who was like a king. For a long time, it was part of a bigger area ruled by faraway kings. But then, in 1947, India became a new, independent country! Junagadh had to decide if it wanted to be part of India or a new country called Pakistan, which was also just starting.
A Ruler's Choice, A People's Surprise!
The Nawab of Junagadh, whose family had ruled for about 200 years, was Muslim. He decided Junagadh should join Pakistan. But here's the surprising part: most of the people living in Junagadh, about 8 out of 10, were Hindu! This made many people unhappy because they wanted to be part of India. It was like picking a favorite toy, but most of the kids wanted a different one!
When Things Got Tricky
Because Junagadh was next to India, it was hard for it to be part of Pakistan. Food supplies started to run low, and things got a bit scary. The Nawab even had to leave his home and go to Pakistan! People in India were upset, and some even formed a 'government-in-exile' to say Junagadh should be with India. It was like a big disagreement at playtime!
Making a Final Choice!
Eventually, India decided to take control of Junagadh. They held a special vote, like a big election, where everyone got to say which country they wanted to join. Almost everyone, 99.95% of the people, voted to be part of India! So, Junagadh became part of India, and that's how this little kingdom found its new home.
