Who Was This Russian Ruler?

Imagine a king who lived a long, long time ago! That was Alexander I. He was born in a big palace in Russia in 1777. He became the Emperor of Russia when he was just 23 years old. He was also in charge of places called Poland and Finland. He ruled during a very exciting and scary time when a famous general named Napoleon was trying to take over Europe!

Battling a Big Bad Guy!

Napoleon was like a super-strong bully who wanted to conquer everyone. Alexander I first tried to be friends with Napoleon, and then he became his enemy! When Napoleon decided to invade Russia with his huge army, it was like a giant snowball fight, but with real soldiers!

The Russian winter was so cold, and the Russian people were so brave, that Napoleon's army got lost and had to go home. It was a huge win for Russia!

Trying to Make Things Better

Alexander I wanted to be a good ruler. He opened new schools and universities so more kids could learn. He even thought about letting people vote for their leaders, which was a very new idea back then! He wanted Russia to be strong and proud of its own culture. Sometimes he made big changes, and sometimes he changed his mind, but he always wanted to do what he thought was best for his country.

A King's Last Days

As Alexander I got older, he became a bit more serious. He worried a lot about people trying to hurt him. He died in 1825, a very long time ago. He didn't have any children to take his place, so his brother became the next emperor. Even though he's gone, people still remember him as the emperor who faced down Napoleon and tried to improve Russia!
