Key Facts
Where the Earth Stretches!
The Afar Triangle is a super special place in Africa where the ground is actually pulling apart! It's like a giant puzzle piece that's slowly splitting into three. This big crack is part of something called the Great Rift Valley. It's so big, it covers parts of Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia. It's a hot and dry place, with very little rain, and some parts are even lower than the ocean!
Home to Our Oldest Ancestors!
Scientists have found amazing fossils in the Afar Triangle that are super, super old. These fossils are from the very first humans, our ancient ancestors! It's like finding a treasure chest of history.
Some scientists think that humans first started to evolve right here, making it the 'cradle of humanity'. Imagine walking where your great-great-great-great-grandparents, who looked very different, might have lived!
Hotter Than Your Oven!
Get ready for a WOW fact! The Afar Triangle is one of the hottest places on Earth. The sun beats down, and the air doesn't move much, making it feel like a giant oven. It's so hot that the Awash River, which brings water to the area, often dries up and turns into salty puddles. Even though it's tough, plants and animals have found ways to survive in this extreme heat.
A Land of Contrasts
Even though it's a dry and hot place, the Afar Triangle has some amazing features. It has the lowest point in all of Africa, a lake called Lake Assal that's way below sea level! It's surrounded by big plateaus, like giant tables of land. This unique landscape has helped keep the ancient fossils safe for millions of years, waiting for scientists to discover them.
