Key Facts
What's an Adder?
Imagine a snake with a super cool zigzag pattern on its back, like a lightning bolt! That's an adder! These snakes are not super long, usually about as long as a grown-up's arm. They have a pointy nose and a wiggly tail. Adders are shy and like to hide in grassy places or near bushes. They are very good at blending in, so you might not even see them!
Where Do They Live?
Adders are like little travelers who love to explore Europe and Asia. You can find them in forests, on heathlands, and even in gardens! They especially love places where they can find sunny spots to warm up their bodies. Think of them as sunbathers who enjoy a warm rock or a patch of sunlight. They need these warm places to help them move and digest their food.
What's for Dinner?
Adders are hunters! Their favorite meals are small creatures like mice, voles, and sometimes even baby birds or lizards. They are very patient and can wait for a long time for a tasty meal to come by. When they catch their food, they use their fangs to bite it. Don't worry, their bite is usually not dangerous to people, but it's best to admire them from a distance!
Baby Adders!
When it's time for new baby adders to arrive, the mommy adder has a surprise! Instead of laying eggs, she gives birth to live baby snakes, usually between 2 and 20 of them! These little snakes are already independent and can hunt for themselves right away. They are born with their zigzag patterns and are ready to start their own adventures in the wild.
