Abdul Halim Khaddam was a very important politician in Syria, a country in the Middle East. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1932. He worked for the government for many years, helping to make big decisions. He was so trusted that he even became the Vice President and then the President for a short time in the year 2000. He was like a captain on a ship, guiding the country.
A Friend to the Leader
For many years, Abdul Halim Khaddam was a close friend and helper to Syria's leader, Hafez al-Assad. Think of them like best friends working on a big school project together. Khaddam was very loyal to President Assad and helped him run the country.
He was in charge of important jobs, like being the Syrian High Commissioner to Lebanon, which is like being the main representative in another country. He did this for a very long time, from 1984 until 2005!

After Hafez al-Assad's son, Bashar al-Assad, became the new leader, things started to change. Abdul Halim Khaddam didn't agree with some of the new ideas or plans. Some reports say they had over a billion dollars. This made them one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the whole Middle East region.
