The Big Shake in Haiti!

On a sunny Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the ground in Haiti started to shake, and shake, and shake! It was a super strong earthquake, like a giant stomping its foot. The shaking lasted for a little while, but it caused a lot of damage.

It happened near a town called Léogâne, which is not too far from the biggest city, Port-au-Prince. This earthquake was so powerful that it's remembered as one of the biggest shakers of the 21st century for one country.

Earthquakes happen when big pieces of the Earth's crust, like giant puzzle pieces, rub against each other. Sometimes they get stuck, and then suddenly they slip! When they slipped in Haiti, it was like a huge jolt.

This earthquake was so strong it was like having 32 Hiroshima atomic bombs go off at once! After the big shake, many smaller shakes, called aftershocks, kept happening for days, making people feel nervous.

This big shake made it hard for millions of people. Many houses and buildings tumbled down, like toy blocks falling over. Sadly, many people lost their lives, and it's thought that over 100,000 people might have passed away. Famous buildings like the President's palace and the big church in Port-au-Prince were badly damaged or broken. It was a very sad time for everyone in Haiti.

When the world heard about the earthquake, many countries wanted to help. They sent doctors, nurses, and helpers with special tools to find people who might still be stuck. They also sent food, water, and medicine.

There was even a big TV show to raise money to help Haiti! It was hard for the helpers to get around because roads and bridges were broken, but they tried their very best to bring help to the people who needed it most.
