1972 Summer Olympics

In 1972, a super fun party called the Summer Olympics happened in a city called Munich, in West Germany. It was like the biggest sports day ever, with athletes from tons of countries coming to compete. The people in Germany wanted everyone to see how happy and friendly their country was, so they called it the 'Cheerful Games'.

They even had a cute dog named Waldi as their mascot, who was the very first official Olympic mascot!

Munich built some really cool places for all the games. There was a big stadium with a roof made of see-through material, like a giant bubble, held up by strong ropes. It looked like a big tent! They also had a swimming pool that looked like it was floating and a big hall for other sports. All these buildings were close to where the athletes slept, in a special Olympic village.

Lots of amazing athletes showed their talents. They ran super fast, jumped really high, and swam like fish! The country that won the most shiny gold medals and the most medals overall was the Soviet Union. It’s like they were the champions of collecting the most prizes at the biggest sports party!

Even though the games were supposed to be cheerful, something very sad happened. Some bad people came and hurt some of the athletes from Israel and a police officer. This was a very difficult time during the Olympics, and it made everyone feel very sad. It showed that even during happy events, we need to remember to be safe and kind to each other.
