Ōfunato wildfire

Once upon a time, in a city called Ōfunato in Japan, a big fire started. It was like a giant orange monster that just kept growing! This fire was so big, it covered an area as large as about 7,200 football fields! That's a lot of space for a fire to play in. It took a very long time to stop this fiery giant.

This super-sized fire began on February 26, 2025. For many days and nights, the fire was burning. It finally stopped on March 9, 2025. That's almost two whole weeks of the fire being active! It was the biggest wildfire Japan had seen in over 50 years. That's longer than your parents have been alive!

When the fire was finally put out, it had changed a lot of things. It burned down 171 buildings, which is like losing a whole neighborhood! Sadly, one person lost their life. And, over 4,500 people had to leave their homes to stay safe. That's more people than can fit in a big school stadium!
