William Arthur Ganfield

Imagine a super-smart person who loved helping schools and students learn and grow! That was William Arthur Ganfield. He was like a principal, but even more important, called a president. He led two big schools, Centre College and Carroll College, for many, many years. He believed in making schools strong and helping students have fun, even with sports!

Mr. Ganfield started his school adventures at Carroll College, teaching history. Then, he became president of Centre College. He made sure the school stayed connected to its church, which helped it get more students and money. He was so good at his job that he was asked to come back and lead Carroll College again! He was like a star player who came back to coach his old team.

Guess what? When Mr. Ganfield was president of Centre College, their football team was SUPER good! In 1919, they were even named the best team in the whole country! And in 1921, they did something amazing – they beat Harvard University, which is a very famous and old school. Everyone was so excited about these wins!

Mr. Ganfield worked hard to make sure students had everything they needed. He helped the schools get more money so they could build new things and hire more teachers. He even made sure teachers had help when they got older, like a special fund for them. He was a great leader who cared about everyone at the school.
