Weismann barrier

Have you ever wondered how you get your traits, like your eye color or how tall you might grow, from your parents? Well, scientists discovered something super cool called the Weismann barrier! It's like a special rule in your body that says only certain cells, called germ cells (which make eggs and sperm), can pass down important instructions for the next generation.

Other cells, like your skin or muscle cells, have their own jobs and don't send those special instructions.

A very smart scientist named August Weismann thought of this idea way back in 1892! That's older than your grandparents' grandparents! He noticed that changes happening to a grown-up's body, like getting stronger from playing sports, didn't seem to be passed down to their babies.

He figured out that there must be a barrier, like a fence, between the cells that make babies and the cells that make up the rest of the body.

This Weismann barrier is super important because it helps explain how inheritance works. It means that the traits you get are mostly from the special germ cells, not from things that happen to your body during your lifetime. This is different from some older ideas that thought you could pass down things like muscles you built.
