Key Facts
Meet the Giant Pencil!
The Washington Monument looks like a giant pencil standing tall in Washington, D.C. It's made of stone, like a big LEGO tower! It's so tall, it's like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other. It was built to honor George Washington, who was the very first president of the United States. He was a super important leader who helped start the country.
A Long Time to Build!
Building this giant pencil took a really, really long time. They started way back in 1848, but then they had to stop for many years because they didn't have enough money. Imagine if your toy project had to wait for years! It finally got finished in 1884. That's older than your grandparents and even your great-grandparents!

When you look at it, you can think about history and how important leaders shape our world. It stands on a big grassy area called the National Mall, where lots of people visit.
Climbing to the Top (Almost!)
Inside the monument, there are stairs that spiral all the way up, like a giant corkscrew! There's also an elevator that can take you to the top. From there, you can see amazing views of Washington, D.C. It's like being on top of the world! At night, special lights shine from the top to make sure airplanes don't bump into it.
