Walter Reed Army Medical Center

Walter Reed Army Medical Center was like a super-duper hospital for the U.S. Army. It was a really big place in Washington, D.C., that took care of soldiers and their families. It was named after a very smart doctor named Walter Reed, who discovered how to stop a yucky disease called yellow fever!

When Walter Reed first opened its doors a super long time ago, it could only hold 80 patients. That's like a small classroom! But over the years, it grew and grew. It became so big that it had about 5,500 rooms, which is more rooms than in many big hotels! The whole hospital was as big as about 20 football fields put together. It was a place of healing that kept getting better and bigger.

This amazing hospital was super important because it helped the people who protect our country. Soldiers travel all over the world, and sometimes they get sick or hurt. Walter Reed was there to make them feel all better. It was the main hospital for the Army, meaning it was the best of the best for taking care of our heroes. It helped so many people stay healthy and strong!

Even though the old Walter Reed Army Medical Center isn't there anymore, its story continues! In 2011, it joined forces with another big hospital to become an even bigger and better place called Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The old buildings are being turned into a new park and cool places for people to live and work. So, the spirit of helping and healing lives on!
