Veteran (Roman history)

In ancient Rome, a 'veteran' was a soldier who had finished all their service. It didn't matter if they were in the fancy Praetorian Guard, the big legions, or even the navy. They were like the star players who completed their whole season and were ready for a break. These soldiers were super important to Rome!

At first, soldiers were volunteers who brought their own swords and shields. They fought for just one big mission. But as Rome grew, so did its army! Soldiers started serving for a set amount of time, like going to school for a few years. They became like professional athletes, trained and ready for duty.

Veterans were like the wise elders of the army. They had seen battles and knew all the tricks. Because they had served Rome so well, they often got special rewards when they retired. This could be land to farm or money, which was a big deal back then. It showed Rome appreciated their hard work!

When a soldier had served their full time, they became a veteran. This meant they had completed their duty to Rome. They were no longer active soldiers but were still respected for their past service. It was like graduating from a special school, showing you had learned all you needed to know!
