Key Facts
The Big Science Team!
After a huge war, the United States created a special team called the Atomic Energy Commission, or AEC for short. Think of them like the captains of a giant science ship! Their job was to figure out how to use a new, super-powerful kind of energy called atomic energy for good things, like making electricity.
They took over all the secret labs and tools that were used to make powerful bombs during the war, but now they wanted to use this science for peaceful stuff. It was a big change, moving from making weapons to making power!
When Did This Happen?
This amazing science team started its work on January 1, 1947. Before that, the military was in charge of all the atomic secrets. But a very important leader, President Harry S.
Truman, signed a special law that said it was time for regular people, not just soldiers, to be in charge of this powerful science. So, the AEC members got to control all the amazing machines and buildings that scientists had built. It was like handing over the keys to a super-secret clubhouse!
Uh Oh, Some Problems!
As the years went by, some people started to worry about the AEC. They thought maybe the rules for handling this powerful atomic energy weren't strong enough. People were concerned about keeping everyone safe from the energy, making sure the places where they made atomic stuff were secure, and protecting the environment.
It’s like if you’re playing with a really cool toy, but you need to make sure you don’t break it or hurt yourself! So, these worries grew bigger and bigger.
A New Plan!
Because so many people were concerned, the government decided to make a big change in 1974. They said, 'We need a new way to handle this atomic energy!' So, they got rid of the old AEC and made two brand new teams. One team focused on doing more science research and making new energy plans, and the other team made sure all the atomic power places were super safe.
Later, another big change happened, and all these energy jobs became part of a new, giant team called the Department of Energy. It’s like reorganizing your LEGO bricks into different, specialized bins!
