Meet the Amazing Turbinia!

Turbinia was a super special boat built a long, long time ago, in 1894. It was the very first ship in the whole world to use a special kind of engine called a steam turbine. This made it go SO fast, faster than any other ship around! It was like a race car of the seas, leaving everyone else in its bubbly wake. Think of it as the first superhero of speed on the water!

A Surprise Party on the Water!

Turbinia showed off its amazing speed at a big event called the Spithead Navy Review in 1897. Imagine a parade, but with boats! Turbinia zoomed past all the other ships, which were much slower. It was such a surprise that everyone realized this new engine was the future. It was like showing up to a bike race on a jet ski โ€“ totally mind-blowing!

Why Turbinia Was a Big Deal!

Because Turbinia was so fast and new, it changed how ships were made. Before Turbinia, ships were much slower. But after seeing how amazing this ship was, builders started making lots of new ships with the same kind of engine. It set a new record for speed and showed everyone that faster boats were possible. It was the start of a whole new era for ships!

Where is Turbinia Today?

Even though Turbinia is super old, you can still see it! The actual ship is at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It's like a museum for boats! And the special engine that made it go so fast is kept safe at the Science Museum in London. So, you can visit parts of this speedy history in two different places!
