Key Facts
Hello, Sunny Spots!
The tropics are like a giant, warm hug around the middle of our planet Earth. They are the places closest to the equator, the imaginary line that goes right around the middle. Think of it like a big, sunny belt!
In the tropics, the sun shines very strongly all year round, which means it's usually warm and doesn't get very cold, even in winter. Many amazing animals and plants live here because it's so warm and often wet.
Why Are They So Warm?
The reason the tropics are so warm is because of the sun! The sun's rays hit the Earth more directly in the middle, where the tropics are. Imagine holding a flashlight straight down on a table – it makes a bright, concentrated spot.
If you hold it at an angle, the light spreads out and isn't as strong. The tropics get that strong, direct sunshine all year long. This makes them the warmest places on Earth, with very little difference between summer and winter temperatures.
Amazing Animals and Plants!
Because it's so warm and often rainy, the tropics are home to more kinds of plants and animals than almost anywhere else! You can find colorful parrots, playful monkeys, and slithery snakes. Giant trees grow so tall they touch the sky, and bright flowers bloom all the time.
These places are like super-biodiverse playgrounds for nature. It’s estimated that over half of all the different kinds of plants and animals on Earth live in tropical rainforests!
The Tropical Belt
The tropics are found between two important imaginary lines on our globe: the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. These lines are about 23.5 degrees away from the equator. So, if you travel to countries like Brazil, India, or Indonesia, you're likely visiting the tropics!
These regions are super important for our planet because they help control weather patterns and are full of life.
