Trolleybuses in Bari

The Bari trolleybus system, officially known as Rete filoviaria di Bari, was an integral component of the city's public transportation infrastructure, serving both the urban core and its surrounding province. Inaugurated in 1939, it represented a commitment to electric traction, offering a quieter and potentially more environmentally friendly alternative to internal combustion engine buses prevalent at the time.

For nearly five decades, the network facilitated urban mobility across several routes, becoming a familiar sight and a reliable mode of transport for the citizens of Bari. The system's operational lifespan, from 1939 to 1987, spanned a significant period of urban development and societal change, during which the trolleybus played a crucial role in connecting residential areas with commercial centers and other key urban destinations. Its eventual closure marked the end of an era for this specific form of public transit in the city.

Remarkably, the story of Bari's trolleybuses did not end with their 1987 closure. Less than three years later, in 1990, a decision was made to re-establish a trolleybus route, specifically route 4 to Carbonara di Bari. This was not a superficial endeavor; it involved substantial planning and investment.

The late 1990s saw the purchase of new trolleybuses, and further vehicles were acquired in the mid-2000s. The physical work to reactivate the former system's route 4, including the reconstruction of overhead wiring and substations, commenced in 2008 and was completed by 2011. By 2009, a fleet of eight trolleybuses was ready: five refurbished vehicles dating from 1997 and three brand-new units delivered between 2009 and 2010.

These vehicles even conducted test runs on the modernized line in 2010, signaling a genuine intent to bring back electric transit.

Despite the significant investment in new vehicles and the completion of infrastructure upgrades, the revitalized Bari trolleybus system never commenced public service. The vehicles were stocked, the lines were ready, and test runs were successful, yet the system remained dormant. The lack of any official explanation from local authorities for this failure to launch is particularly striking.

This situation presents a curious case study in urban planning and project execution, where substantial resources were committed, but the final operational step was never taken. It raises questions about the underlying reasons, which could range from shifting political priorities and funding issues to unforeseen technical or logistical challenges that were never publicly disclosed. Even after the revival project failed to materialize, a considerable length of overhead trolley wiring, some of which was never part of the planned reopening, remained in place across Bari for decades, a silent testament to the city's past and near-future transit aspirations. These unused wires persisted as a visual anomaly in the urban landscape. By 2021, the city council finally approved their removal, signaling a definitive closure to the trolleybus chapter.

The removal work was ongoing, with further progress noted in late 2024.
