The Emergency (India)

Once upon a time, from 1975 to 1977, India had a special period called 'The Emergency'. The leader, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, decided to make some big changes. It was like when your teacher says, 'Everyone quiet down, we need to focus!' This was a time when the country's rules were different for a little while.

The main person in charge was Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She was a very important leader! During The Emergency, she had a lot of power to make decisions quickly. It was like the captain of a ship making sure everyone followed directions to get to a safe harbor. Her son, Sanjay Gandhi, also helped with some big campaigns.

After 21 months, which is almost two whole years, The Emergency came to an end. It was like the end of a long game where everyone could relax and play freely again.
